Ile de l'Est, the easternmost island in the Crozet archipelago, is a glacially eroded basaltic stratovolcano. A metamorphosed gabbroic complex is cut by a dense network of dikes and cone sheets that fed younger volcanic rocks. The 10 x 19 km island is the oldest of the Crozet Islands, but contains five younger oxidized scoria cones, most of which are on its E flank. The young scoria cones may be Holocene (LeMasurier and Thomson, 1990).

La isla del Este es una isla enclavada dentro del archipiélago de las Crozet, en el océano Índico subantártico. Pertenece a Francia. Situada a 18 kilómetros de la vecina isla de la Posesión, es la segunda mayor isla del archipiélago con sus 130 kilómetros cuadrados, solo por detrás de su vecina isla de la Posesión con 150 kilómetros cuadrados. Su mayor altitud es el monte Marion-Dufresne, de 1050 metros de altitud, a su vez mayor altura de todo el archipiélago.
