Vernadsky Ridge

火砕丘 · Russia · 1183m

The Vernadskii Ridge descends diagonally across this Space Shuttle image of northern Paramushir Island (with N to the upper right). The ridge is comprised of the Vernadskii (south) and Bogdanovich (north) volcano groups, consisting of small cones and lava domes. The historically active Ebeko volcano lies at the far upper right. The three large smooth-textured surfaces along the Pacific coast (to the right) are pre-glacial Pleistocene lava flows.

地質学的概要

The Vernadsky Ridge on northern Paramushir island in the northern Kuriles is a large massif with over 40 volcanic centers in three volcano groups each ~7-8 km apart. The active Ebeko complex is at the N end, with the Bogdanovich group in the center and the Vernadsky group towards the S end. The latter two groups were considered to have been active in the Holocene by Gorshkov (1970). A geological map in Belovezhets et al. (2023), modified from Melekestsev et al. (1993) and State Geological Map (2001), identified Holocene lava flows from the Bogdanovich, Krasnuhk, Kozyrevsky, and Krasheninnikov cones in the central group, and from the Bilibin and Vernadsky cones in the southern group; these were also previously mapped by Gorshkov (1970). No eruption dates are known. A shear-wave seismic velocity model by Belovezhets et al. (2023) identified one "low-velocity anomaly at the depth of 4–6 km associated with magma reservoirs, which is overlaid by a prominent high-velocity anomaly representing the rigid cover" below the southern and central ridge, separate from that below Ebeko.

英語版の要約

Vernadskii Ridge is a volcanic group located in the northern part of Paramushir Island, Kuril Islands, Russia. It is named after Russian scientist Vladimir Vernadsky. The Vernadskii Ridge together with Ebeko is one of the volcanoes on Paramushir that have erupted after the last glacial age, and both of them form one of Paramushir's volcanic ridges; during the last ice age glaciers from the Vernadskii Ridge merged the island with Shumshu island. A hydrothermal system is associated with the Vernadskii Ridge, which has temperatures of 180–260 °C (356–500 °F). Metasomatic alteration of country rock has taken place.
